#FreeBritney

I created “Free Britney” signs in contribution to the #FreeBritney movement that acknowledges the unjust conservatorship Britney Spears has been a victim of since 2008. Although this situation is specific to Britney Spears, the movement has surfaced discussion of misogyny, mental health awareness and domestic abuse. Along with the conservatorship, Britney Spears’ relationship to the media is a prime example of how the patriarchy slut-shames and poses women as “crazy.” As a long-term Britney Spears fan, feminist, advocate and victim of domestic abuse I find these conversations essential to a university setting.

The project is on display at the University of North Carolina at Asheville from April 28th to May 12th 2021.

She's so lucky, she's a star
But she cry, cry, cries in her lonely heart, thinking
If there's nothing missing in my life
Then why do these tears come at night?
